From school closure to recovery in education

Most schools have reopened worldwide following the historic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but education is still in recovery, assessing the damage done and lessons learned. The pandemic affected over 1.5 billion students and youth, with the most vulnerable students bearing the brunt of the damage. Some progress toward the 2030 Education Agenda goals has already been lost.

UNESCO’s Education Sector has worked with ministries of education, public and private partners, and civil society from the start to ensure that all children and youth continue to learn. The work of the Sector is now focused on prioritizing education as a public good for all in order to avoid a generational catastrophe and drive long-term recovery.
